Profound & Multiple Learning Disabilities

Here at TNST we do everything we can to meet our objective of happier Next Steppers…

  • Here at TNST we do everything we can to meet our objective of happier Next Steppers. Many of the individuals we support have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), which means they have a very severe learning disability alongside additional complex needs such as physical disabilities, sensory impairments or complex health conditions. This often means they require high levels of personalised support to communicate, engage and access the world around them.

To support this, we provide a wide range of in-house and community-based activities, always tailored around the individual needs, preferences and abilities of our Next Steppers. A big part of what we do is delivering interesting and engaging sensory-based sessions that enable us to meet a wide range of sensory needs. These activities stimulate the senses to create therapeutic environments that promote relaxation, reduce stress, encourage focus and enhance overall wellbeing.

For individuals with sensory loss, it is especially important that we help them explore the world in alternative ways, such as through touch, taste and smell. Our team is committed to ensuring that all activities are thoughtfully adapted so everyone can participate meaningfully — whether through the use of switches, hand-over-hand support, specialist equipment or visiting community providers with accessible and adapted facilities. Above all, we ensure that every session is not only inclusive and purposeful, but also fun, engaging and enriching.

Our Team

  • Trustee (Parent Of Next Stepper)

As mum to Matthew, who has complex needs, I was one of a group of  parents and professionals who recognised the need for the provision of a service that would meet his, and other similar young peoples’ needs when they left Ravenscliffe, the excellent specialist secondary school here in Halifax.

It seems a long time since but bM (before Matthew) I worked for a large building society primarily responsible for the mortgage budget gaining investment management experience. I have also worked for the Calderdale Adult Education department and enjoyed teaching adults with disabilities such topics as basic skills, health and wellbeing and art and crafts.  I have also been a support assistant for cookery, literacy and numeracy as well as swimming.

I am a former trustee and past Chairperson for a national charity, the Tuberous Sclerosis Association and am married to Philip, without whose help and support I would not be able to manage my various volunteer roles.  We have been fortunate that we are able to enjoy a reasonably active life with Matthew, who despite the complexity of his learning difficulties and his epilepsy, is physically able and very eager to walk and cycle on his tandem (at the back!) with his dad.

Like many parents of children with special needs, I have represented, attended, spoken at, lobbied and been involved with numerous organisations and events, with the sole intention of improving the lives of our offspring.  It therefore gives me great pleasure to see the development of the Next Step Trust into the flagship provision that we originally envisaged at the start of our journey.

  • With a degree in engineering and a diverse career in UK manufacturing industry, I am currently a self employed environmental consultant, running three Packaging Compliance Schemes.  I have been married almost forever and have a grown up daughter who loves to dance. When I am not working, I love to walk on the hills & moorland of Yorkshire.

I have been supporting charities that help disadvantaged adults all of my adult life. I am currently a trustee/director of four local charitable businesses.

King Cross

Our first centre, King Cross, holds a special place in our history. We began here in just two rooms and have since expanded to occupy the entire site. This centre now features our own hydrotherapy pool and is home to our primary sensory facilities, including two state-of-the-art sensory rooms and a high-spec ball pool. It remains a cornerstone of our organisation, combining heritage with cutting-edge resources. It is also home to a recently developed Garden of Memories, which features a wheelchair-accessible swing.
