Inspired by two very disparate things: my Grandad’s love for painting birds and an orange lighthouse in Iceland. This is three different takes on the initials of my name - ‘JB’. 

As a perfect homage to my Grandad, my first concept was to phonetically interpret my initials as ‘Jay Bee’ to create a jay bird and a bumble bee. The colour palette was influenced by a self-portrait taken on a trip around Iceland. The blue of my jacket beautifully complimented the bright orange paintwork of the lighthouse.

I then split the difference and took the J of my name and incorporated an updated design of the bee which now buzzes around to form the letter B with its flight path.

Finally, my windblown hair in the photo got me doodling to try and incorporate the overlapping sections of colour and movement I’d devised for the bird into a more recognizable self-portrait.
